1.2 The Things We Have in Common: Part 2

Items Needed:

Set the Stage:

Have last week's buddies pair up, and pass out their commonalities board games from the week previous.

Allow them a few minutes to review it together.

Activity:

Bring the class back together, and ask students the following questions, allowing buddies to answer aloud. This will allow the class to get to know their other classmates:

  • Have students discuss how assumptions about gender, age, and race can prevent us from identifying shared interests and learning from differences.
    • What did you learn about your partner?
    • How much did you have in common with your partner?
    • Was anyone surprised that you had certain things in common with your partner?
    • Is it easy or difficult to remember what you didn’t have in common?
    • Why do we sometimes assume that we don’t have things in common with each other?
    • Discuss how sometimes, when people are different from us in one particular way, we assume that we don’t have anything in common with them.
    • If someone is much older than you, such as a grandparent, you may think that you’re different from this person in every way. Is it accurate to assume this? Why not?
    • Is it accurate to assume that there are always differences between groups of people, such as boys and girls? Why not?
