Ask students to think about the things they have in common.
- How many of you went to ______ (school) last year? How many of you had ______ (teacher) last year? How about ______ (teacher)?
- How many of you like chocolate ice cream? How about mint chocolate chip ice cream?
It looks like we have a lot in common!
Explain that in this activity, students will find out more about what they have in common with one another.
- Sometimes, we don’t realize we have things in common because we don’t take the time to talk to one another and find out what is similar and different.
- For this activity, we’re going to work with one or two buddies and find out more about what we have in common with one another.
Activity:
Buddies play a game to discover things they have in common.
Have students sit with their buddies.
Distribute a Commonalities Game Board to each pair.
Students should put a mark on the circle below each question if buddies have the same answers.
After completing all the questions, encourage buddies to ask questions that extend the conversation.
- “How did you break your arm?”
Make sure students turn in the paper at the end of the lesson because it will be used for next week's activity: Make sure students' names are on the paper.
