Set the Stage:
Explain that the class will talk about paying attention to how we think about ourselves and one another, and why that’s important.
Discuss how our thoughts are like thought bubbles that only we can see.
Give examples of your own thoughts when you walked into the classroom today.
- I hope I remembered to turn off the lights in my house; I hope everyone remembers to hand in their homework today!
Ask students to provide examples.
- It looks like Kelly got a new backpack; I can’t wait to practice our class song for the talent show.
Discuss how we don’t always pay attention to our thoughts or control them.
- Sometimes we’re thinking things and don’t even realize it.
- That’s because we’re busy doing so much throughout the day that our thoughts can be automatic and we can’t always control them.
Activity:
Lead students through the Pop That Thought Bubble activity.
Place students in diverse groups of about four students and distribute a Pop That Thought Bubble Worksheet to each group.
Explain that the worksheet includes side-by-side Thought Connection Boards, which illustrate the connections among our thoughts, feelings, and actions.
- The Connection Board on the left side of each situation is completed for you and shows how thinking in negative ways leads us to being disrespectful and unkind to ourselves or others.
- On the right side, only the feelings and actions are filled in.
Explain to students that they will “pop that negative thought bubble” on the left and replace it on the right side with a positive thought that leads to those feelings and positive actions.
- Complete the first situation as a class if you feel students need additional guidance.
As time is up, collect the worksheets. If they are incomplete, it is okay- they will be completed next lesson.
