1.4 Classroom Identity: Part 3

Items Needed:

  • Butcher paper and markers
  • Last weeks papers of students and their Names and Mottos ideas

Set the Stage:

Have students gather in their groups from last week's SEL activity.

Give students back their paper where they wrote their class motto and have each group pick one spokesperson to announce it to the class.

Activity:

Have each group designate a spokesperson to present to the class and explain why their group chose that particular name and motto.

Write the suggested names and mottos on the board and have the class vote anonymously.

Post the winner on the classroom wall for the duration of the school year and encourage your students to hold true to it.

Discuss the Activity:

Why is it important for us to create our own name and motto? What does this say about us and our classroom?

Why is it important for everyone to be involved in making these decisions?

How will this affect the way we interact and treat one another this year? Will this help us remember to watch out for and help one another? Is it OK to exclude ____ (another class name) from a game or activity? Why not?
