Europe divides North America

Examine the map which shows the major powers of Europe dividing up the New World.  

Key Word:  Colony - When the powers of Europe came into North America, they claimed the land for themselves (even though natives already lived there).  When people came from Europe to live in the New World, they called it a colony.  A colony is land that is claimed and occupied by another country.
