I like to use a simple memory device to learn 4 important geographic landforms in the U.S.

PA and RA. 

PA represents the two oceans that border the continental United States.

RA represents the two longest mountain ranges in the United States.

Looking at the eyes, you see two that are looking at the names of oceans.  Do you see PA?

PA = Pacific, Atlantic

Two eyes are looking at the names of mountains.  Do you see RA?

RA = Rocky, Appalachian

There are three circles.  The red circles show that the US and Canada share two important landforms - the Rocky Mountains and the 5 Great Lakes.

The green circle shows that the US and Mexico share the Rocky Mountains.

The US and Canada also share the Great Plains, but they're not on the map above.

Assignment:  

The yellow shaded area shows where the 13 British Colonies started.  Based on the information on this map, why do you think the original colonies didn't spread west for almost 200 years?  Answer in complete sentences.
