1.1 Who We Are: Part 2
Items Needed:
- Students COMPLETED Who We Are Worksheets from last week: https://online.harmonysel.org/grade-4-who-we-are-worksheet/ Links to an external site.
- The items students decided to bring in to show off
- Your own personal item you wanted to show as an example
Set The Stage:
Arrange chairs in a circle and begin sharing items with the class. Each student will need their Who We Are Worksheet and they decided to share.
Model what to do by sharing your item first so that students feel comfortable when it is their turn.
- Explain what your item is, why it is important to you and the item shows that you are..
Activity:
Have each student share his or her personal items with the class, using their Who We Are Worksheet as a guide.
Encourage students to ask each other questions.
- Why did you choose this item to share with the class?
- How long has this item been important to you?
- If you were asked to bring an item last year, would you have brought the same one? Why or why not?
- If you’re asked to bring an item in 10th grade, do you think you’ll bring in the same one? Why or why not?
Collect Who We Are Worksheets and distribute to students for the next lesson.
ALTERNATIVES
Divide the class into groups and instruct students to share their items with group members. Students may switch groups later in the day or on a different day.
Instruct students to share their items with their buddies. Then, direct the class to sit in a circle, and have each student share their partner’s items and its significance with the class.
Discuss the Activity if Time Allows:
What was it like sharing your item and learning about your classmates?
What did you learn about each other? Did anything surprise you?
Why do you think it is important for us to spend time getting to know each other at the beginning of the year?
