4.0 Parent Observer Overview

We need every BISD parent or guardian to become a Canvas Parent Observer. Each parent will need to create their own Canvas account and download the Canvas Parent App (if they have a Smartphone)

WHAT IS A CANVAS "PARENT OBSERVER?"

Becoming a Parent Observer allows your parent/guardian to link to your Canvas course work and assignments and email your teacher inside of Canvas.

 

The instructions for your parents are in their Canvas Parent Hub. But, if your parent/guardian needs help setting up their Parent Observer account and then downloading and setting up their Canvas Parent app, we need you to assist them.

Just follow the steps on the next pages to get your pairing code from your Canvas course to give to your parent/guardian.

Clarification from the video above:  All parents will get a Pairing Code from the student Canvas account. The instructions for getting the pairing code from your Canvas Settings and helping your parent/guardian with the setup are on the following pages. 

 

WHAT CAN A PARENT OBSERVER DO?

• View and read announcements
• View assignments index page
• View the calendar
• Join conferences, if invited
• Join collaborations, if invited
• View personal inbox
• Send conversation messages to instructor and student they are observing
• View the dashboard
• View files unless they are locked
• View grades of student they are observing and filter, view scores and dates, and print grades
• View modules and see due dates, point values, etc.
• View pages and contribute if the instructor enables the Anyone can edit it setting
• View profile pictures, if available
• View syllabus
• View outcomes
• View quizzes index page

 

WHAT CAN A PARENT OBSERVER NOT DO?

• Comment on announcements or discussions
• View active quizzes
• Submit assignments or quizzes
• View course rosters
• Send conversation messages to students in the course they are not observing
• View locked files or folders
• Join groups
• View unpublished courses
• Access the Chat tool
• Reserve appointment slots in the Scheduler

 

 

After parents set up their Parent Observer account and link to you, they can also download the Parent Canvas app.

Then they have the option of logging in to Canvas from their computer or their mobile device (Smartphone or tablet).
